Course Description:

Teaching attributes and advanced language concepts to learners with complex communication needs can be difficult. Traditionally, attributes have been taught only after receptive mastery is acquired; however, attributes can be taught when teaching expressive communication. This training will teach participants to identify the attributes with which to begin, teach discrimination skills, and create lessons that are functional and meaningful for the learner throughout the day.

Specific strategies and examples will be shared. For example, if the learner does not demonstrate a preference for  particular attributes we will discuss and demonstrate “container therapy." We will also address how to teach more complex attribute lessons within both requesting and commenting lessons. Culturally responsive ideas from around the globe will be shared to demonstrate the importance of teaching attributes no matter where you live!

Learner Objectives:

  • Identify how to assess each learner’s attribute preferences
  • Describe the three steps for teaching attributes within advanced communication lessons
  • Identify three ways to incorporate attribute lessons within requesting and commenting
  • Identify two attribute lessons from around the globe
